Fourth Ones A Charm??

Okay, so I know y'all are all jealous because I GOT TO VISIT ANOTHER STATE CAPITAL.

 Welcome to Lansing, Michigan!

When I got my schedule and discovered that I would be going Lansing, I had ONE GOAL (besides having a successful recruitment during this visit). That was make a TRIP to the capital building.

Today, this goal was reached (met? grammar, idk?)  and I saw my FOURTH capital while being "on the road".

Pretty architecture on the stairs...

I don't really have much to say about this capital. I saw ONE statue, so I guess nothing happened in Michigan because there was no history other than Mr. Blair. Anywhere. Not that I would've read it, but I could've at least captured a couple of pictures of signs and things.

Pretty much the best $1.25 one could ever spend on parking to avoid having to parallel park downtown Lansing.

Happy Happy FRIDAY!!

BUNKED

My hair got hooked on my bunk bed today...and ripped out my updo.

Maybe if I brushed my hair more often this wouldn't happen?... Just a thought.

I've Been Everywhere Man...

As of today, I've been to SIX states in two months. WHAT!

I am having a blast and am loving every second of my job...I caught myself singing this song to myself  as I got on the plane a few days ago to travel to Michigan.

It can be scary, overwhelming and intimidating to walk onto a campus I know nothing about. In a state nothing like home. Getting to know the people at every campus, who they are and where they are from is what fuels me every day. The memories that I am making will truly last me a lifetime. The places I am seeing and the things I have learned about the diversity of this world in two short months I am very thankful for.

Out of the 10 airports that I have been in so far, Detroit DEFINITELY has impressed me the most.

As I rode down this escalator with all the airport critters, I started to notice a green ambiance (SAT WORD) coming from the area below.

As I entered this UFO land, this MAGICAL music started playing the the green walls started to CHANGE COLORS. As you can imagine, I was fascinated...the purpose of this in an airport? Who knows. But I didn't hate it.
I tried to snap pictures as I was walking (NOT STANDING) on the moving floor, but I was too overwhelmed to capture anything besides this initial picture.

And HERE IT IS!!! Disneyland, Detroit airport style.

Yeah, it doesn't take much for me to get excited. I loved everything about my walk through the tunnel, especially since it was a great distraction from the fact that I was lugging 100 pounds of luggage through an airport.

After a day of traveling, my girls and I landed in Michigan. I was the only one in cowboy boots and the only one not wearing layers of clothes. No shame.

On The Road Again

Today I am leaving South Carolina for two weeks to head to:
 MICHIGAN

I would do a little tribute on my blog to where I have been for the past four weeks, but I will be back in October!

This whole "cold" weather thing... is going to be INTERESTING.

I'm sorry, but 35 degrees tonight. No Sir.

Me and my one TCU sweat shirt and North Face are going to have to make a trip to the mall to buy some sweaters....

An exSECellent experience

This weekend I had the opportunity to experience my first SEC game with a chapter member, watching the University of South Carolina Gamecocks (aka a Rooster) play the Vanderbilt Commodores (aka a Pirate).

The tailgating, number of people, size of the band and atmosphere of this game was different than what I am used to. I've always heard of the intensity of SEC fans...there is just something about going to a HUGE school like the ones in this conference. I had a blast learning the traditions of USC and ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE MASCOT, Cocky (not anymore than I love my beloved SuperFrog though)!!!

My chocolate must have known what I was up to on Saturday, because I was wore "garnet" aka red to the game. Yes, Redhead in Red...at least it was just a necklace ;)

It was such a treat to be able to experience such a fun game!!

Now I am finishing up some final tasks here in South Carolina and have got to start packing for my next visit, TOMORROW!!

Peace, Love & an ExSECellent Weekend

B is for Bid Day

So Pinterest is cool in all, but this whole fish centerpiece thing...not as easy as that little DIY site makes it look.

The theme for Bid Day was "Reeling in the Freshest Catch Since 1898"

^legit hand painted banner

Naturally, to go along with the nautical theme we thought fish bowl centerpieces would be a fun and festive contribution to the theme. Having done this before at another chapter I was totally down to help execute this bid day plan.

The first red flag of this project was finding the fish floating in their bag in the bathtub.

After I discovered this, I began --
Operation: Fish Centerpiece
Plot: Abbey and New Member coordinator work together to keep the fish alive
Setting: The bathtub
Theme: Stayin' Alive

Knowing a few things about raising a goldfish, thanks to the many I won as a child at the elementary school carnival, I knew to submerge the fish in their bag from the pet store in a bowl of water so they can adjust to the temperature and not go into shock. We did just this.

Step One: Submerge the bag of fish into the water they will begin to live in.

Step Two: Prepare the other fish bowls by putting fancy fish drops in their water

Step Three: Take the fish and put them in their new homes, saving some JUST IN CASE

Step Four: Keep an eye on the fish and make sure they are swimming, not sinking (or floating)..

Step five: Realizing bottoms up is not just a song, its was a way of life for my new critter friends....

WELL good ole' Pinterest didn't make it clear that in order to have a successful fish centerpiece you should use MINERAL water or DISTILLED water with drops that you can purchase from the pet store. Normal tap water has too much fluoride and other contaminants that can't be gotten rid of via pet store drops.

We may or may not have lost  just about every fish. With no time to let this ruin the day, we had to figure out what we could do with what we had.

Instead of going to the story and buying a bunch of distilled water and more fish, I channeled my inner 2001 event planning self and resorted to the "floating flower" decor. Thankfully the Zeta house was neighbors with Food Lion.

Step six: Be creative

The flowers added some color and turned out just fine!

In the end, it doesn't even matter (okay Linkin' Park)... NC State got an amazing New Member class and we're distracted by BASKIN ROBBINS, SNOW CONES, a BUBBLE MACHINE & DJ to even care about the fish.

Bottom line: If you every try and raise a gold fish... don't.

Peace, Love & Just keep swimmin'

NC State

On Wednesday I got a message that I would be leaving Friday for a recruitment visit to North Carolina State. I got to spend the last five days doing my second formal recruitment during my travels!

During my visit I had the chance to stay in the Zeta house complete with a house mom and the most amazing chef!!!

I got there at the end of Round One of recruitment, so my journey didn't really start until, Round Two, which was philanthropy round. As a consultant I had the opportunity to go around to other chapters and learn more about their philanthropies. Kappa Delta's involves working with Girl Scouts and had THIN MINT milkshakes as their beverage for the day. I had to capture the moment so I could reminisce about the goodness of that shake.

This recruitment was interesting because it was during school, so there was a break on Monday with no recruitment. This meant, I had a day to hang out and explore with the members without our schedules revolving around the day of recruitment. This was my one day to get a little bit of rest, but I had an interaction with the blue and red in the wee hours of the morning, because the alarm got set off.

Hilarious. He asked me the address of the house and a phone number that he could call. Did I have the answer to either of these questions? Nope. Was anyone else awake to answer my calls/texts? Nope. So I had to problem solve right then and there, thanks to my phone I was able to give him the information he needed.

I used this wake up call to my advantage and took a stroll up and down the hills of NC to find Lake Johnson Park.

I definitely didn't hate it.

Round Three was Skit Round. This chapter did "The Zeta Show" a parody of Nickelodeon's Amanda show! It brought back so many childhood memories. Loved it!

COMPLETE with DANCING LOBSTERS!!

My trip ended with Bid Day, which was a day full of thinking on my toes.

Details of Bid Day to come tomorrow!!
